My Apple Vision Pro nightmare
  + stars: | 2024-03-26 | by ( Albert Fox Cahn | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
So when the Apple Vision Pro arrived, I was giddy with excitement to dive into the type of toy I'd dreamt of since childhood. The Vision Pro tries to answer the question of how you can use a computer without a mouse or keyboard. Apple Vision Pro marks the foundation of a new architecture of total digital isolation. Apple touted your ability to use the Apple Vision Pro to connect to your laptop, simulating a screen for your device. In the end, I followed the path of so many other Vision Pro early adopters and became an early returner.

Why do phones need apps? At this year's Mobile World Congress, the future of the smartphone and how we connect were firmly under the microscope. Deutsche Telekom and Brain.ai demoed one such instance at MWC: a smartphone with no apps. It's just an idea for now, but it's prompting an interesting question: Why assume the smartphone of the future has apps at all? But the smartphone industry is slumping, and there's a "need to invigorate the upgrade cycle," Milanesi told BI.

In its announcement of Altman’s firing, OpenAI claimed that Altman had been insufficiently “candid” with the board. But then hundreds of OpenAI employees, nearly the company’s entire staff, threatened to leave, potentially for Microsoft, if the company’s board didn’t resign and reinstate Altman as CEO. It’s unclear how Shear will be affected by Altman’s return. “We are encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on X. Publicly, Altman has long cautioned about risks posed by AI, and he has pledged to lawmakers and customers that he would move OpenAI forward responsibly.

AdvertisementIn the past, I've argued that Apple products have become boring because Apple seems to have lost its way with useful product innovation. But the truth is, there's a very good reason why Apple doesn't do drastic changes to its products: slow, steady and reliable products are keeping Apple on top. To be fair, under CEO Tim Cook, Apple has had several big hit new products: Apple Watch and Air Pods, come to mind. While Air Pods will work with others, they are really designed to work best with Apple products. But ultimately, even if you find Apple products boring rather than classic, they are a great choice for those looking for long-lasting, high-quality, user-friendly, reliable technology.

As many as 300 million full-time jobs around the world could eventually be automated in some way by generative AI, according to Goldman Sachs estimates. Some tech leaders see the gadgets as the iPhone of the AI era, a way to own the hardware we use to interact with AI. A true iPhone successor could be tech's "golden goose," but past attempts have failed. The race is on as generative AI tools like ChatGPT, OpenAI's conversational AI chatbot, take the world by storm. Even though he said AI hardware innovations represent "the golden goose for tech players in the next decade along with software," he doesn't think all of them will be successful. AdvertisementAdvertisementYet, despite AI's impressive capabilities, Haigh said that smartphones may still be easier to use for the average consumer than AI devices, which means that AI personal devices may take awhile to gain public interest.

It's a tech startup building what the company calls the "world's first wearable device for stabilizing lucid dreams." Lucid dreams occur when a person sleeping becomes aware they're dreaming and may be able to control parts of the dream. Humane AI, a company founded in 2017 by former Apple employees, debuted its wearable — the AI Pin — on the runway last week at Paris Fashion Week. And famed iPhone designer Jony Ive and OpenAI's Sam Altman are also reportedly discussing an AI hardware project. The co-founders have the type of lofty dreams typical of a modern-era tech startup, with Wollberg comparing the company to OpenAI.

Mira Murati wasn't always sure OpenAI's generative chatbot ChatGPT was going to be the sensation it has become. "In 2019, we had GPT3, and there was the first time that we had AI systems that kind of showed some sense of language understanding. And if you really think about it, that hasn't really been revolutionized in decades." Murati envisions users being able to talk with ChatGPT the same way they might chat with a friend or a colleague. "And so that's really where we're going — towards these systems that will eventually be able to help us with extremely hard problems.

SoftBank’s AI dream team is far from iPhone killer

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - SoftBank Group’s (9984.T) Masayoshi Son, former Apple (AAPL.O) iPhone designer Jony Ive, and Sam Altman, boss of ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI, are forming a seemingly exciting alliance. SoftBank, which is flush with cash after the Arm IPO, is putting up over $1 billion into the project. Several Big Tech companies have tried to build consumer devices that imitate the popularity of the iPhone, without much success. And AI queries may drain mobile batteries quickly, as some iPhone users have discovered. It’s unclear what kind of device Son, Ive and Altman have up their sleeves.

Apple's headset project suffered from CEO Tim Cook's "distant" approach and lacked the confidence of key company executives at times, Bloomberg reported Thursday. Cook isn't alone in keeping his distance, Bloomberg reported. Top executives including Apple software chief Craig Federighi and hardware executive Johny Srouji have both shown concern about the project, Bloomberg reported. Federighi seemed "wary" and kept his distance, Bloomberg reported citing people familiar, and Srouji compared the headset effort to a "science project." Apple made the decision to sell the headset product at cost as opposed to at a loss, as it originally planned to do, Bloomberg reported.

Now, Chesky said the company follows a principle Steve Jobs held at Apple — to never work on more than the CEO can focus on. "We were like staring into the abyss," Chesky told host Jason Calacanis. According to Chesky, a few people who famously worked closely with Steve Jobs during his time at Apple ultimately proved instrumental in reshaping how Airbnb runs. Chesky told Calacanis Ive used to tell Jobs it was important for Jobs himself to be personally involved with product development.
